In order to avoid the misunderstandings that were becoming common as more and more people communicated about various topics on these boards, a professor by the name of Scott Fahlman suggested, in one of his posts, that people on the chat board use a colon followed by a hyphen and a right parenthesis to indicate that what they were saying was meant in jest. A similar construction which ended with a left parenthesis was to be used to indicate that someone was not joking. This the first two facebook emoticons were born.
Use of these facebook hidden emoticons spread to other local networks and eventually the ARPANET and Usenet, which were essentially military and civilian communication networks which would later give birth to the World Wide Web as it is known today. Quickly, people began to develop other free facial icons which could be used to demonstrate a growing number of nuanced facebook emoticons.
Facebook emoticons soon had to be dealt with in word processing software as they became more popular. There were so many free versions and meanings that a person could not remember all of them. Many word processors will automatically turn a certain series of characters into a small graphic. Such is the case with the traditional free smiley. Just typing in the three characters required will cause writing software to substitute a graphic of a smiley. Writing programs will do the same for a limited number of other facebook status emoticons.
Free facebook symbols have become so numerous that many writing interfaces now include a pop-up window application which allows a writer to simply click on the desired free emoticon without having to remember the key sequences necessary to create it. Facebook emoticons have also evolved to the point that they go beyond facebook smiley faces and actually express movements or feelings distinct from emotion, such as tiredness or boredom.
